Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to my 8th grade mathematics website. Here you will find many resources to help you succeed in my class.
Feel free to search around on your own but allow me to highlight some of the features of this website.
Under the "Calendar" tab, you will find a calendar detailing your daily homework (including tests). This will be updated as frequently as possible to keep pace with our classroom.
Under the "Practice/Videos" tab, you will find links to videos and online practice problem for most of what we will cover this year in math. I will be updating it as we cover new subjects so you have a great tool to use at home to study for upcoming tests.
Under the "Worksheets" tab, you will find most of the worksheets that were assigned in class or for homework. Feel free to print these off at home if some seem to disappear.
I hope this website helps you to succeed in my class, and, as always, I am open to your questions or comments. Please feel free to use the form below or email me at [email protected] for any quesitons or comments.

Khan Academy
Why Use It?
Khan Academy is an incredible online resource that allows students to pace themselves through their own learning. Sometimes I may go too fast in class (or too slow depending on your student) so those that need extra time to learn it can have someone reteach it to them through the internet. I have found the 100+ videos that correlate to our 8th grade math curriculum and I am working on putting them all on my website here. Students will have the opportunity to watch Mr. Khan explain various mathematical concepts slowly. Each video lasts about 10 minutes and covers one concept at a time. Next, your student can practice a concept by clicking on the exercise/practice link (or the Green "Practice this concept" button that can be found on several of the videos). |
How to Best Use Khan
I have found that most students learn in different ways. Therefore, each student can tailor Khan Academy to his or her own learning style by following some of the strategies outlined below: VIDEOS: Some students are visual learners and just need to watch a few problems get solved before they can get it themselves. If this is your style, I have worked on outlining every applicable video and labeling which unit it goes with. Watch each of these videos a few days before your unit test. PRACTICE: Some students learn by doing. Therefore, the practice/exercises that I have on my website are perfect for these students. Students can simply practice an infinite number of practice problems that not only gives them the correct answer, but also provides them with steps to solve the problem each time if they need it. PARENT ACCOUNTABILITY: Parents, you can set up your child's account so that you can see how often they practice and how well they did. In order to do this, you will need to create an account (see next column) and have your child "add you as a coach." Directions for how to do this are in the right column. |
How to Sign Up
STUDENTS: You need to sign up and add Mrs. Raines as a coach so that she can see all of the incredible work you are doing at home in preparation for your tests. She may even reward you if he sees exemplary work. Click here for a handout on how to sign up. PARENTS: I encourage you to sign up as well. If you do this, your child can "Add you as a coach" and you can see what videos your child has watched, what problems your child has attempted, what concepts your child struggles with, and ways in which you can help your child at home. You will create an account in the same way that your child did but will need to find your "Coach name" (it should be your email address or login ID). |
